Previous Experience

Mass Observation

While working at the Mass Observation Project, I was initially only required to summarise a set of year-on-year databases for the archive, helping to create a demographic profile of the typical entrant, but quickly found that the Excel database in question had major differences in terms of standardisation and formatting across its different iterations. I was able to use external and internal guidelines to put the diary databases on a common footing, with standardised local area designators and gender formats, and used this to create a graphical representation of the kind of people writing in diaries. This allowed the project to better focus their outreach efforts towards non-typical entrants.

Creative Future

With the arts charity Creative Future, I had access only to their older client database, which was undergoing an update, and in many cases only had a name and out-of-date contact details attached to a client. I was able to use external databases and dedicated research to extract demographic details from the database, helping them pinpoint underrepresented groups which they weren’t serving well. I also analysed their literary competition data across multiple demographics and compared this to Census data to show who they are and aren’t reaching. This enabled them to better target their marketing and promotion and increase entrants by 16%.
